Looking for the perfect gift for a friend or family member this holiday season? Stop by the Main Library or Children’s Library to check out the selection of handmade holiday ornaments available for a suggested donation. All of our ornaments were handmade by library staff out of scrap-booking paper or the pages of well-loved books. Ornaments are priced very reasonably at $5.00 for basic ball ornament and $20.00 for the more detailed Kusudama flower ornaments. All proceeds will go entirely to benefit our Friends of the Library organization, which in turn helps purchase books, computers, and other necessities for the Library.
Here’s an opportunity to help your community and your wallet! Beginning November 11th and running through November 22nd, the Library will be taking Food for Fines. Bring in canned goods, boxed meals, daily hygiene products, and other none perishables to reduce fines on your Library account. Each item brought in to either Library location will count toward $1.00 off the total fines amount owed on your account, up to $30.00. All goods will be donated to the Gretna Neighbors organization to benefit those in our community who are in need.
The Gretna Neighbors are especially in need of these items:
- Peanut Butter
**This promotion only applies to fines for items that have been returned late, and not for lost or damaged materials**
The Friends of the Library are having a bake sale Saturday, October 26th at McKinney’s Food Center starting at 9:00am. All proceeds from the sale will help the Friends of the Library to purchase items needed for the Library. In the past, this money has been used to purchase books, computers, furniture, and has even help sponsor our Summer Reading Programs.
We hope to see you at the bake sale as you support your library and enjoy a sweet treat as well.

Mark October 1st on your calendar to eat at Runza! On this day, Runza Restaurants will conduct the 11th annual Great Books for Great Kids fundraiser in which Gretna’s Runza donates 15% of the day’s total proceeds to the Gretna Friends of the Library.
Runza Restaurants has been a long time supporter of reading. ”Reading is vital to lifelong success and provides an excellent opportunity for families to spend time together,” stated Becky Perrett, Director of Marketing for Runza National. ”Donating funds for books and promoting literacy is an important endeavor for children and the community.”
Last year, Runza donated nearly $370 to the Friends of the Library. ”We would like to thank Runza for their continued support in promoting literacy in our community. We know these funds will be put to great use in growing children’s love for reading,” said Paul Wasalaski, President of the Gretna Friends of the Library. The Friends of the Library plan to utilize funds that are raised in developing the Children’s Library collection and sponsoring literacy based programs at the Library.
September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Gretna Public Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that our students have the most import school supply of all – a library card.
Our library provides all types of students with the tools they need to succeed. We provide students with exciting and engaging programs that make learning fun and resources that they can access from the library or from home – all with a library card. It is for these reasons that a library card is most important school supply of all.
Library Card Sign-up Month isn’t limited to students only though. Resources at the Gretna Public Library are available to anyone who has a library card. If you live in the Gretna Community and don’t currently have a library card, September is the perfect month to get one. Some of the services we provide are free wireless access, computers for the public, a great DVD selection, magazines, local newspapers, best-selling novels, free access to downloadable eBooks and audiobooks, a multitude of databases perfect for all your researching needs, and of course programs for the entire family.

In recent years, social media has become the way a lot of people send and receive information to each other, and keep informed with businesses and organizations that interest them. Through social media, users are able to customize the kinds of topics they want to read about, and who they want to interact with on a regular basis. Think about it- how often do you find out about a dinner deal, a friend’s new baby, or even a sale at your favorite store through Facebook, Twitter, or some other form of social media? Social media is a wonderful tool for communicating with people, which is why the Gretna Public Library is looking to increase its usage of this technology.
The Library is officially kicking off its new Like to Follow Your Library campaign, and we want you to get involved. If you are on Facebook we would love for you to “like” our page; and if you have a Twitter account, consider “following” the Library. Through these resources, we are hoping to reach more people, share more information about Library happenings and events, and thus bring more potential patrons through the Library’s doors. The internet has no barriers to hinder how far we can reach, and as Librarians and Information Professionals, it gives us the perfect vehicle to promote the importance of life-long learning, share ideas, and get feedback from the people we’re here to serve: you and your families.
In the months ahead, we look forward to expanding our use of social media and incorporate it into our daily communication with the public. Along with our website, these methods of communication will enable our users to receive the most up to date Library information possible. All you have to do is Like to Follow Your Library!

The Gretna Public Library staff is excited to give community members living in SIDs a new option in obtaining a library card. These Summer Reading Program Cards are for future patrons who want to check out our large collection’s items from May 1st through August 31st. Summer Reading Program Cards will cost $15 for a household account – that’s just $3.75 per month! If, at the end of August, a patron wishes to get a full year membership, then s/he can pay the remaining $25 for our normal full-year card. If a year-round card is acquired, then at that point any member of the household who is 6 years old or older may obtain his/her own card. Card registration and activation will begin on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, and normal ID requirements are required for signing up.
