Kid Explorers Archives – Fall 2009

October 1, 2009:  We started to read the eco-thriller Deadly Waters by Gloria Skurzynski.  Then we drew pictures and wrote a short autobiography.  Finally we shared our stories with the entire class!  It was an interesting and entertaining way to get to know one another.

October 8, 2009:  We continued reading Deadly Waters and came close to finishing chapter 2.  Then we made football player faces using two paper plates, a goal post out of tongue depressors, and then a folded paper football.

October 15, 2009:  We started our time together with some “punny” jokes.  Then we continued Deadly Waters up to a very exciting moment, and then it was time for our art project.  We made miniature scarecrows using wooden spoons, felt, and other craft materials.  The amount of creativity that went into each design delightful to see.

October 22, 2009:  The thrills and chills continue in the adventure story Deadly Waters.  After reading a little longer than normal due to popular demand, we then made a very eco-friendly craft:  we took damaged and old CDs and decorated them as magnet animals.  Miss Rebecca took pictures of all the creative critters on her cell phone, and posted some of them for all to see!  If you’d like credit for your cd creature, then please let Miss Rebecca know.

October 29, 2009:  It was a craft-extravaganza today!  We decorated and ate our own cookies.  Then we attempted to sew together a jack-o-lantern bag.  It was a struggle until someone realized how much easier it was to sew when you cut the yarn shorter.  Again, the kids’ creativity shone with this project.

November 5, 5009:  We continued to read the exciting Deadly Waters.  We had to stop reading at another dramatic moment where a shark was going to attack an injured manatee.  Then we used pinecones to make silly squirrels.  Finally we had some fun with puppets.  Click on any of the pictures to see the full image of the kids’ crafty squirrels!

Quilt 40November 12, 2009:  We spent an extra-long time reading today!  After we stopped at a less dramatic, but upbeat moment we had a great time with our craft.  Each Explorer got their own quilt square to decorate however they wished.  Quilt 41The quilts are now hung up on display in the library.  Be sure to click on the image to see a larger version.  Also feel free to contact Miss Jean if you’d Quilt 42like the picture of your child’s quilt square emailed to you.

November 19, 2009Today we quickly finished up the eco-thriller Deadly Waters by reading while we did our craft!  We made cute turkey place setting jars and filled them with nuts and mints.  Furthermore, please note that Deadly Waters by Gloria Skurzynski is now available for checkout in case a child missed a class.
