Book Bugs Archives – Fall 2009
Week One: We read all about making friends in Gertrude Chandler Warner’s Benny’s New Friend. Then we drew self portraits and had fun telling the entire class all about ourselves: name, age, favorite food, and more!
Week Two: Chika Chika 123 by Bill Martin Jr. was a super-fun story we read. We also learned from Marjorie Priceman How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World. We then made apple trees and with fingerpaint made “thumb apples.”
Week Three: We read about a not-so-scary scarecrow in Cynthia Rylant’s Scarecrow. We then decorated our very own scarecrows to take home. Finally we played with puppets if there was enough time at the end of class.
Week Four: We read Yoshiko Kouyama’s The Giving Chair. We also read Mr. Murry and Thumbkin by Karma Wilson. Then we made beautiful animal masks with feathers, pompoms, and crayons.
Week Five: We read spooky stories like Skeleton Hiccups by Margery Cuyler and The Little Green Witch by Barbara Barbieri McGrath. Then we decorated cookies with frosting and sprinkles. Then we got to enjoy our own yummy creations.
Week Six: The children got to be extra nutty at this story time! Naturally we read about silly squirrels like in Don Freeman’s Earl the Squirrel. We also heard the fun story Those Darn Squirrels! by Adam Rubin. Then for our craft we decorated our very own squirrels! The younger children made their own squirrels’ moving fluffy tails with crumpled cereal, whereas the older ones made a super-cool squirrel hideout.
Week Seven: This week we read some wonderful books: Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson and Oliver Who Would Not Sleep by Mara Bergman to name two. Then the
children were each given a quilt piece to decorate in any way that they would like. The quilt pieces were then joined together and hung in the library. Be sure to click on the image for a
fuller view of each picture. If you’d like one of these images emailed to you, then please don’t hesitate to contact Miss Jean.
Week Eight: It was Turkey Time this week! The Littlest Pilgrim by Brandi Dougherty and Turkey Trouble by Wendi J. Silvano are just a few of the Thanksgiving-related stories that we read. Depending on the age group we either made turkey napkin rings, or a turkey collage made with “leaf” feathers.
