Book Bugs Archives – Winter 2010
Week One: It was a wonderful start to our Book Bug time together! We read wintery tales full of chills and giggles such as Emma’s Magic Winter by Jean Little. One class got a special look at Berta & Elmer Hader’s award-winning illustrations in
The Big Snow. Most of the children were amazed that this book was older than Miss Jean! Then depending on the class we either made special winter scenes with epsom salts or shaving cream and glue.
Week Two: From the classic The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper to All Aboard the Dinotrain by Deb Lund we had a great time reading about trains. In all our classes we did variations of creating our own trains using different geometric shapes.
Week Three: This week we read heartwarming stories like No Hugs Till Tuesday by Julie Downing. Then the children turned heart cut-outs into different creatures like butterflies and frogs.
Week Four: We started by singing 5 Little Monkies Jumping on the Bed. Then we read some silly stories like Trudy Harris’ The Clock Struck One. Then we used special paper cut into cute shapes and used stick pencils to scrape away the top layer to reveal beautiful colors beneath.
Week Five: This week we celebrated National Tell a Fairytale Day with lots of fairy tale stories. We heard lots of classic stories told in unique ways like in Lila Prap’s Once Upon 1001 Stories. Then we made our very own fairy tale character puppets using small paper bags and a variety of materials. Feathers were flying as we had a really fun time together.

Week Six: Celebrating the NEA’s 14th annual Read Across America we listened to audio versions of Dr. Seuss tales like Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose. We had a Seussarific time together. Then we made our very own Cat in the Hat collage.

Week Seven: This week we either read about a volcano or read stories that had us erupting with laughter. Then we made our very own volacanos to take home. We used construction paper for the volcano itself and then strips of tissue paper to represent the lava.

Week Eight: This week we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a green themed story time. We read books about plants and gardens. Then we made our own version of a Chia Pet. We made silly faces on cups and then planted grass hair.
Week Nine: Can you believe our classes are over for this period? It seems like we just began! We celebrated our last class with several silly stories and then did coloring activities or beaded beautiful necklaces. Miss Jean and Miss
Rebecca would like to thank everyone who participated. We look forward to seeing our Book Bugs this Summer!
