We invite you to come to our library to get a card anytime we are open. The process is very simple.
1. Your photo ID with current address or
2. A piece of your business mail (utility bill, bank statement, etc.) dated within the last 30 days along with your photo ID
. . . may possess library cards. A parent or legal guardian must sign the application. Parents must also have a current library card in order to sign up their child.
You will be asked to pay a non-resident (or "rural") fee in the amount of $40 (cash or check).
Sometimes this can be confusing and may even feel unfair, because many people who pay this fee feel very much a part of the Gretna community. So you deserve an explanation:
Our library is funded by property taxes paid by the citizens of the City of Gretna. Many newer subdivisions are not yet annexed by the City. The library does not receive funding from rural areas in Sarpy County or non-annexed subdivisions. Therefore, the library charges a non-resident fee as a sort of "substitute" tax in order to be able to provide books and materials for those who live outside city limits.
If you are unsure whether you live in City limits, here are some quick hints. . .
Subdivisions in City Limits: Plum Creek, West Plains, North Park, Willow Park (non-Celebrity Homes portion), Devonshire, Northridge Estates, Santa Fe Pointe, and Chestnut Ridge.
Newer Subdivisions Outside of City Limits: Southgate Estates, Lincoln Place, Forest Run, Lyman Highland, Green Acres, Crystal Creek, Sarpy Heights, Palisades, Tiburon, Standing Stone, Willow Creek (Celebrity Homes), Standing Stone, Bellbrook, Sugar Creek, Arbor Gate, Covington, Pebblebrook, Copper Ridge, and more.
Sometimes a quick look at your property tax statement is the easiest way to figure this out. If you don't see "Gretna City Bond" listed, then you are outside city limits.
Remember, this fee pays for itself after checking out just a few items! Check Library Value to get an estimate of how much you could save in a year. . .
